How to Measure for a Custom Iron Gate: 7 Essential Steps

A custom iron gate can only perform as well as the measurements behind it. A difference of even a fraction of an inch can affect clearances, hinge alignment, latch placement, and the way the gate moves through its full swing. Before ordering a pedestrian gate, garden gate, or driveway gate, document the entire opening—not just one width and one height.

This guide explains the measurements and site details a fabricator needs to evaluate a made-to-order steel gate. It is intended as a planning resource. Final dimensions should always be reviewed for the specific design, hardware, mounting surface, and installation conditions.

1. Measure the opening width at the top, middle, and bottom

Measure from the finished surface on the left side of the opening to the finished surface on the right. Record the width at three points: near the top, at the middle, and near the bottom. Do not assume block walls, posts, or columns are perfectly parallel.

If the measurements are different, do not average them. Send all three numbers and photos showing the opening. The narrowest point, required installation clearance, and condition of the mounting surfaces will influence the final gate and post dimensions.

2. Measure the height on both sides

Measure from the finished ground or threshold to the desired top of the gate on both the hinge side and latch side. If the design has an arch, identify whether the requested height refers to the side height or the highest point of the arch.

Also note changes in grade. A walkway that rises across the opening may require more bottom clearance, a different swing direction, or a revised gate profile.

3. Confirm the hinge side and swing direction

Stand on the side from which the gate will normally be approached and identify whether the hinges should be on the left or right. Then decide whether the gate should swing inward or outward. Take photos from both sides and mark the preferred direction if there is any chance of confusion.

Check the full swing path for steps, slopes, walls, plants, utilities, pool equipment, and other obstructions. The gate should not collide with surrounding features or create an unsafe pinch point.

4. Identify the mounting surface

Tell the fabricator whether the gate will attach to concrete, masonry, structural steel, wood framing, existing posts, or new posts. Include close photos of each side of the opening. A decorative cap, thin veneer, cracked block, hollow column, or narrow edge can change the recommended mounting method.

For freestanding posts, describe the soil and nearby concrete. For surface-mounted posts, show the slab thickness and available footprint when known. The post size, base plate, anchors, and burial depth must match the gate weight and site conditions.

5. Plan the lock, latch, and access hardware

Decide whether the gate needs a standard latch, deadbolt, keypad, electric strike, cane bolt, pull handle, or another access-control component. Provide the exact hardware model when possible. Lock boxes and handle clearances should be designed around the selected hardware before fabrication.

For a double gate, identify which leaf will be active and whether the inactive leaf needs a cane bolt or another method of securing it. For an automated driveway gate, share the operator plan and the mounting requirements from the operator manufacturer.

6. Record the ground and drainage conditions

Photograph the ground across the full opening and the area through which the gate will move. Note concrete joints, pavers, drainage channels, curbs, gravel, and areas where water collects. Bottom clearance must allow the gate to move freely while maintaining the intended privacy and security.

If new concrete or footings are planned, coordinate their final elevations before the gate dimensions are approved. Measuring before the finished surface is installed can lead to an incorrect gap or overall height.

7. Send a complete measurement package

A useful measurement package includes:

  • Top, middle, and bottom opening widths
  • Left-side and right-side heights
  • Desired gate height and arch height, if applicable
  • Hinge side and swing direction
  • Photos from the front, back, and each mounting side
  • Mounting surface or post information
  • Lock, latch, keypad, or automation requirements
  • Ground slope, drainage, and swing-path details
  • City and ZIP code for shipping or installation planning
